is there any chance the capture groups will ever produce releases in 1280x720p
instead of hr-hdtv? it would be true hdtv and much closer to most tv's native
resolutions.

720p releases already exist, it's just you don't see them on public trackers.
they are mostly encoded in x264 these days - it started as an experimentation
and the codec ended up replacing xvid for this resolution.

you even have 1080i transport streams (raw .ts files in mpeg-2).

all (almost) all shows available in 720p or just a few episodes once in a
while?

x264 sounds great. what about file size? how big ist a 45 min show in 720p
encoded in x264?

why don\'t these releases make it to the public trackes?

and finally: where can i get them?

if you've ever seen them you'll know that files can be 4-5gig, most ppl wont
bother downloading files that size when the standard 350mb episodes tell you
exactly what is going on in the show! and take far less time to acquire

are you sure you don\'t mistake x264 for mpeg2?

720p would have 1.8 the number of pixels of hr-hdtv. considering that a 700 mb
hr-hdtv includes a not so small 5.1 audio stream and that x264 should not
compress worse than xvid the resulting files can\'t have a size of 4-5gigs.

a 45min show encoded in x264 (720p) is usually somewhere between 1-1.5gb in size.

it was that big because it was mpeg2 which frankly is never a good choice for
any kind of content. (i hate having to download these 4.7 gb dvd-rips when a
1.5 gb xvid release would do.)

a file size of 1-1.5 gb would still be big, but not unreasonably big given the
quality you get. go to mininova and search for "jericho". you'll find the
first two episodes in 720p at a size of 1.4 gb each. these releases have the
same audio data rate like hr releases. that means it doesn't just have 1.8
times the pixels of a hr release but it's also less compressed. shrinking it
down to 1.0-1.2 gb should be possible without significant loss.

you're actually not far off there, the majority of releases are roughly 1.1gb.

answers for stdr:

mmmmh. to my knowledge, every show that has a hr release also has a 720p one.
which means pretty much every hd show.

x264 sounds great. what about file size? how big ist a 45 min show in 720p
encoded in x264?

1.1 gb in general, but you also have 1.4 gb releases (for the same ep) with a
higher bitrate.

why don't these releases make it to the public trackers?
even hr stays exceptional on public trackers. public means mainstream, and 350
mb versions are still the most popular ones. if you're really a hardcore tv fan,
you'll search for more by yourself. get contacts on i.r.c., chat with people on
forums... you know, social networking 😉

and finally: where can i get them?
on... private trackers, which don't like being advertised by definition 🙂 also
on some i.r.c. chans. big = private, there's no workaround!

one place you can find allot of them is usenet [if i can say that] but you need
to pay access free for the servers, but its fast speeds.

thank you for this info.

i'm just starting to get the bigger (hr hdtv) versions.
they arnt to big and they are better quality.
i have been getting the 350 meg files now for a while.
quite a few people have said in some forum, (not sure which one).
if your going to save stuff and burn them onto disk then get the 700 meg
versions.
so i have been started with (torchwood) and now i'm getting (heroes).
just a little point tho! i have had a hard time trying to find the 700 meg hr
hdtv of torchwood 01x06.
so it's seems like they only release the hr hdtv if they want.
or maybe if the demand is good enough.

bye for now (si) (uk).. ;-)

bit-hdtv.com

thats one of the best bt trackers for hdtv stuff.

on usenet they have the x264 releases, but also have the original transport
streams (usually 3 - 5 gb for a 45 minute show, but the quality is the best you
can get because the file is not re-encoded)

there have been 2 hr for torchwood 1x06, actually:

torchwood.s01e06.hr.hdtv.xvid-bia
torchwood.s01e06.hr.hdtv.internal.xvid-sfm

there can be incidents, but if you have the first ones in hr, there's no reason
for the cappers to stop.

pretty sure torchwood isnt available in hr till a wednesday night, as it plays
out on bbc3 on a sunday, which is pdtv only, then simulcasts on bbc2 and the
bbc hd trial channel on a wednesday hence no hr on sunday.

i've found a few 720p releases, mostly documentaries. the quality is great, but
its not something i'd do often i don't think, even with a fast connection it
still takes a good 6 hours to download the 2-3gb they are.

that said, i would like to have them for programs like 24!
