i recently requested someone with full copies of the older without a trace
episodes seed them for a while (because there were about 20 people stuck on near
full downloads, with no seeds, for about 10 episodes).
there's at least one really nice guy out there who read my posts and did
exactly that. thanks to him, i and about 30 other people got the episodes (more
peers came on line during the process). hopefully that will continue for these
episodes (and it does seem to be, some people are seeding) thereby keeping the
torrents alive. props to the wonderful seed from norway, and honorable mention
for the one from argentina who kept popping in to help.
conclusion: requests for seeds (if done right, and in enough places) can work,
as there are nice people who do really do pay attention and upload in the spirit
of p2p.
the point of this post is to suggest that in the next version of the eztv
site a system of requests for seeds on existing torrents with no seeds (and
*only* those, not 'can eztv please cap extreme boredom from obscuretv?') be
implemented, with a short list displayed prominently on the front page, so that
existing torrents can be revitalized by the occasional good samaritan. i think
this would significantly extend the lifetime of torrents and be *extremely*
helpful. there are good people out there who would pay attention and seed.
you could make a button next to the link to the torrent so that it's easy, and
only works for existing torrents. you could display the requested torrents on
the front page based not only on when they were requested, but also how often
(and if possible, how many peers are waiting). requests could be removed when
they have at least one seed, or perhaps two. you could also have a page giving
the complete list of seedless torrents.
this way old torrents can pick up again, and the requests list in these forums
would be only for requests for new torrents, while the requests for seeds on old
torrents would not get lost in the static, or buried in the messages associated
with the actual torrent (which, since it is old, probably doesn't get read by
anyone who has the complete file).
there are good people out there, and thanks to them the old torrents are still
going and live again, so...
whaddyathink?
ps still looking for wat 5x09 🙂 here's hoping!
