EZTV Quality

just read the posting about some people (the uninformed and trolls) complaining about the quality
put out by eztv. i've been known to ask a few stupid questions here. what i'm saying is that i'm not
the most technically savvy person in the world. but eztv has made this so easy a slow monkey could
do it. i have nothing but praise for what eztv puts out. great stuff, easy to use. now stop the
bitching.

i believe i know which file admin is speaking of that people complained that it
would not play. (fg?) i too had problems with this file playing in wmp even with
the latest codec package (even went to xvid.com). that should do it, right? i
mean i only have 1.5 tbs archived and this was the only xvid file that didn\'t
work in wmp, but we are idiots. hmmm.

even though i did eventually stream it to my tivo just fine (i did take it on
faith that the file was fine and would convert to mp4), the commentary calling
people idiots and trolls because they don\'t use vlc player is completely
ridiculous and utterly uncalled for. if the community wants to complain that
the uploader evidently used a strange codec or .avi shell for the video, i say
let them. we shouldn\'t be leaving sniveling comments about players that work
the bestest in whole wide world like we\'re some grade school kids in \'95, should
we? i should hope not, and i would think that someone who sees him/herself as
an admin would see and respect that.

it seems a codec issue is the cause of that family guy episode. and seeing as
vlc was the only player to smoothly play it without any issues, it was safe to
say that it was the best option to use without having to go indepth as to which
codec was forcing it to render a black screen. it's impossible to solve every
persons issues when it comes to playing files because every person has their
own unique little setup causing a number of issues.

for example, my setup at home played that family guy episode fine, i tested
with wmp, mpc, vlc, bsp all worked fine. my media box wouldn't play in mpc, i
found out the ffshow was the cause for it and fixed the issue. then you have
yourself that couldn't play it on wmp, did you even test with gspot to see what
the problem may have been?

i'm with aydin here.. the amount of people on here that bitch about something
we have no control over is not worth our time. if aydin knows that vlc works
and has proven to work, he has every right to tell people so. if you still have
issues with that, you are welcome to no longer download from us.

my question is, why wouldn't you use vlc. if you're converting it to a divx
format that you want to burn onto for an appropriate dvd player, its one thing
if a file has issues. but if you're on a pc, why would you want to go through
the hassle of codecs. that's such a 90s thing.

the reason having codecs seperate from players failed was that the registry had
to point to the right codec. if you installed multiple codecs for one type of
format to get the right one that worked for you, it ended up screwing up your
registry. vlc solved all that. its a 14mb free download that's extremely stable
and has a bunch of features, and was self contained for almost every format
(with the possible exception of real media). what exactly does another media
player have that vlc doesn't offer? if you want to use something else, that's
fine, but if you don't want to deal with the hassles of having the right codec,
what do you have against vlc?

the problem wasn't codec related, it was a because of the gabest avi splitter.

on the whole vlc vs mpc thing, mpc all the way for me;
-the filters in ffdshow and ac3filter offer way more features than vlc has
-vlcs interface is clumsy and buggy
-vlc doesn't do as good a job of decoding vids as the codecs do
-k-lite has fixed any registry problems that used to exist. it's very good at
installing/uninstalling/tweaking/fixing etc.
-also, complete thumbnail generation or nasty orange cones, hmm?

that not to say i haven't got vlc installed though, it's useful for testing purposes

how so? gabest is the standard splitter for mpc.

edit: just to expand on this a bit. the file was missing the first few frames of
video, which is why gabest couldn't handle it. the alternatives are;
(from k-lites faq)

-microsoft:
has problems playing incomplete and truncated files.

-gabest / mpc internal:
this one is able to play most incomplete and truncated files without problems.

-haali:
has problems playing (truncated) files that don't contain an avi index.
contains an audio switcher. that is useful for playing avi files that have
multiple audio tracks (which are quite rare) in players that don't contain an
audio switcher themselves, such as wmp and media center.

from what i can tell, vlc work similar to haali, as in it needs the avi index to
seek incomplete files (i could be wrong here). since the avi index is at the end
of the file, the choice ultimately comes down to what part of the file are you
most likely to download first, the begining or the end. it's a tough one. at
least with k-lite you can switch splitters though, eh?

hmmm, i see we have a modern version of the vi vs emacs war, not that i've been
writing much code lately.

vi is king!

i play the 720p matroska files with vlc (using ffdshow as an external codec) on
a 2005 vaio notebook (rather slowish single-core 1,73 ghz pentium m with 1 gb of
ram) without any noticeable problems. the only setting i actually had to adjust
was switching off deblocking in the ffdshow settings.

it always comes down to the right settings ... be it vlc, wmp, mpc or whatever
player/frontend one chooses.

i'm a huge fan of lost and i was thinking if is it possible to upload the last season (season 6) with
1080p files, or at least the last episode at 1080p.

on the post about lost's last season being uploaded in 1080p, aren't they only aired in 1080i/720p?
that's how hd channels air stuff in australia anyway.
