hi folks,

i have a silvercrest kh 6510 home dvd player which will play just about
anything i can throw at it ,but on some downloaded shows, everybody loves
raymond, til death and the recent the lost room, playback seems to 'judder' in
some places.by judder i mean that long shots seem to step from frame to frame
very quickly.playbakck does not stop or anything but it it very annoying !

the dvd player is divx compatible and the 'faulty' files all seem to be xvid
do you reckon that could be the problem ? i've always been under the
impression that a machine that'll play one should have no problem playing the
other.

any suggestions ?

thanks.

hi nearly all files are in xvid. it might be you disks that have the problem
or you are burning them too quick, try lowering the write speed or changing
disks

its probably because you didn't remove packed bitstream from the movie... or
maybe check for a newer firmware which supports it.

an4rew is right, some avi files have a 'packed bitstream'.
there is a free program on the net called mpegmodifier which you can use on most
avi files to unpack the bitstream. it's a lot quicker than re-encoding or
converting to another format!

it does get annoying having to check files all the time though so you may be
better off getting a newer dvd player, that's what i did 😉

edit: may actually be called mpeg4 modifier!

thanks for the info folks.

i downloaded mpegmodifier and gave it a lash and it seems to have done the
job.a little time consuming but i can put up with that.unfortunatley as yet
i've been unable to find a firmware update for my machine but i'll keep
looking.

thanks again.

i went the mpegmodifier route for about a year--works like a charm. but it's a
pain to have to do this constantly (even with the batch mode setup), so i
recommend that with the low prices of divx players now you just buy a new one.
that's what i did and i'm much happier.

the silvercrest i have is only new,2 weeks ! the piece of junk i had previous
to that was less hassle but it didn't have a usb port, that's why i got the new
one.

sometimes there are third party firmware people modify from similiar players to
the one you have so you can have the new features as well. have a google around
and remember these are not official firmwares so at your own risk 😉

have you tried burning the disc at a lower speed? the problem might be with the quality of the burn. i
know it might sound oldskool, but i've see it before, albet a long time ago.

edit:

sorry about that, i didn't fully read that you use usb to read the movie files. hrm. are you use the drive
you read them with is usb2.0 compliant? i'd check into that, then i'd check into making sure that my dvd
player has the latest firmware.

i may have misled you, sometimes i burn the avi files to a dvd-rom and watch
them, those are the ones that 'judder'.the usb part of things is irrelavent
anyway since it dosen't work at all !
