dudes here are just too dumb. forgive em. if they only looked at the 03x01&02
they would know. but hey, maybe they don't even know bsg is already halfway
season 3, so how could they know?

that brings up a point i've always been curious about: why do the bsg files i
look at (not speaking of these, which i haven't seen) always look poor when
compared to practically any other tv rip i see around here (some of which are
positively crystaline)? is the show itself shot in a grimy, murky way, or is
it the capper? the resolution (roughly 640x350) is the same as most everything
else, so it's not that.

i think it\'s because galactica has so many more space shots than other shows.
the big blocks of colour seem to attract more artefacts. if you look at the
brighter shots, the quality is better, or so it seems to me.

this just kills me. you are replying to a message that gives you the answer to
your own question!!! not to mention the same thing has, again, been said a few
messages up.

since you're now dead, i guess you won't see this response, but you
missed a key part of my question: the resolution of the shows i'm comparing is
the same.

i'm not talking about 700mb "hr" releases or anything like that.

so we have bsg on one side, looking grimy and grainy, and others shows at the
same resolution, looking clear as a bell.

as the previous poster said, i guess it's to do with space and the rough-and-
tumble cinematography of this show, but all scenes regardless of type look poor
by comparison.

the scifi bsg caps are from a digital satellite source; the skyone bsg caps are
from an hdtv source - *much* higher resolution.

it doesn't matter whether the resulting caps are both the same resolution. the
difference is what source the cap is made from. the better quality and higher
res the source, generally, the better the compressed cap will look.

if that's not clear, here's an example: lost and house look pristine because
they're capped from hdtv sources. the resolution in the 350mb download is
exactly the same as the bsg scifi dsr 350mb download - however the key
difference is that bsg is capped from a far lower resolution source (dsr) than
lost/house etc and makes a massive difference to the end product.

make sense?

yes, that helps. a quick search on nforce for other "dsr" titles reveals that
i've never downloaded them (there aren't that many), so i have no dsr to dsr
basis for comparison, but i suspect the visual effects (color saturation/
desaturation, apparently deliberate grain -- all things to make it look the
opposite of star trek) in bsg make it seem all the worse. i suspect if i saw,
say, "the daily show" dsr rip that it would look pretty close to normal.

so as you say, the dsr (i assume dvb) bsg resolution must be below 640x350, and
he's upscaling it to that resolution for release (just like with 720p it's
downscaled).

i'm curious what the resolution is, though. with some casual searches, i found
that dvb comes in a variety of resolutions (and bitrates), such as: 480 x 576,
352 x 576, 352 x 288, 720 x 576, 704 x 576, 544 x 576, 528 x 576, 480 x 576, at
least.

one of the 352's?

for gods sakes

just buy the $30 dvd box sets


i only d/l and keep until the dvd is released, nothing to do with quality, i
just like to watch the show as soon as humanly possible, not wait 2-3 yrs for
local networks, and i also like to repay the studio and the actors, by actually
buying their products, looks better on the shelf, and hey it may even keep the
show around a little longer
