just wondered which bittorrent client people are using and why?

i'm using azereus, as it was the first one i was recommended. so far, so good.
the main complaint i've heard is that it's resource hungry, but i tend to
download overnight so don't notice.

what do other ez tv users use? why?

cheers - m.

ps: ez tv - you guys rock :-)
pps: i'm currently loving prison break, heroes, lost...

i don't think so. it's called azureus.

azureus: if you can't spell it, don't use it 😛

you must have the speshial supah sekrit build of
azureus that the rest of the world has been denied access to.

either that or you have a radically different definition of "resource hungry"
from the rest of us. 😉

if you are happy with the way your setup works, fine. who are we to dictate
how you use your computer ?

but have you even *tried* anything else to get a comparison, before concluding
az isn't resource hungry ?
you may be pleasantly surprised by how different your machine feels to use
when it's not struggling.

but - to answer the question at hand ...

i switch between azureus & utorrent at different times.

i find some of the azureus plugins much more comprehensive when it comes to
certain tasks (notably rss feed handling). however, the inherent java nature
of az means that no matter how wonderful the az code is, it will always be a
pig for ram.
if i am going to be at the computer and doing other stuff concurrently then i
use utorrent because of it's teeny resource footprint.
if i am not going to be using the machine for a while then it doesn't really
matter if it's performance is somewhat degraded, so i leave azureus chugging
away and auto-grabbing stuff from rss feeds unattended.
it's a world-wide tivo 🙂

utorrent is the slim jim of apps.

az is like a guzzling wart hog - massive, never satisfied but pretty
unstoppable.

personally, after using loads of apps. i settled for utorrent because it does
it's own thing and i can use the pc at the same time.

as for anyone selling out - they all do. they are not creating apps and running
a business from the inside of a cardboard box with gerbils powering their egg
box server. the only difference between the horrible sell outs is: we learn the
full details.

i use azureus on my primary seeding machine. i find it gives me substantially
more control over what i want to seed and when, and has the important ability to
seed things which are named and organised differently than the torrent expects
(which utorrent i believe is still unable to do in the case of multi-file
torrents). i also use it for any torrents for which the tracker is down, as i
find its dht network to be substantially better than that of utorrent.

it's true that az uses up a large amount of resources, but only compared to
utorrent (which is unfair, because utorrent's usage is insanely small!). its
resource usage is substantially better than it used to be, and even with around
400 torrents loaded and 4 or 5 active it only uses around 100mb of ram on my
machine. 100x more than utorrent, sure, but not a huge hit if you have a pretty
decent machine.

i use utorrent on my other machine for quick grabs, stuff that i don't plan to
seed long term (or things which i will transfer to the other machine for long
term seeding at a later date).

when people ask me for a recommendation, i usually suggest utorrent. i don't
see azureus's extra features as important enough to warrant its large footprint
for the vast majority of people. but for some of my needs azureus is still the
best option.

i use azureus, and so far since i switched back to it after doing a round robin
of other clients (bitlord -> azureus -> abc -> utorrent -> azureus)i havent had
any problems with, it works better (features wise) and so far not being a
resource hog (as much as it used to), i can quiet happily have az open and watch
videos or listen to music or encode videos or use other resource intensive
programs with no
problems, and no i dont have a top of the line pc, i just have a bog standard,
1.8ghz sempron with 1gb ram, nothing special, az is probely the best client out
there.

i used azureus for a long time...and loved it and recommended it all the time to
everyone. but there came a time when the machine i was trying to use to
download was starting to show the strain azureus was putting on it. even using
firefox was painfully slow. then i found utorrent and didn't look back. the
best thing i like about utorrent was the single executable with an impressively
small resource footprint. and imo, its rss feature is better designed than any
of azureus' rss plugins. then i got myself a macbook and found that azureus ran
really well on osx. well...i did have to replace the firmware on my router,
using tomato firmware instead of the stock made my wireless network usable even
while running azureus...when before i made the switch, the network was dead
within 30mins of running azureus. azureus is faster than utorrent when
downloading. there is no doubt about that. but if u want to use ur computer
while the torrent client is running, then utorrent is ur choice on a pc...on osx
it doesn't matter...but if u don't care for the features and just want a nice
client, then bitrocket or transmission will suffice. hope this helps.

transmission announces to the tracker far too frequently, doesn't obey
bittorrent protocol, excessive upload 'bug' and obviously it's banned on most
private trackers

i've used the original bittorrent, which was ok, bittornado, utorrent, which i
found awful and azureus
