Additional trackers

i must admit i'm not an expert on all the intrinsics regarding the tracker
technology, but i *do* know i have a working tracker using azureus' built-in
ditto. 🙂

so, my question is, isn't it possible to use any tracker, regardless of
bandwidth etc, to assist in the tracking? i really want to help making this
formidable eztv service even better than it is, so if my humble adsl-2000 line
can be put to any good use, i'd be more than happy to oblige.

the "regardless of bandwidth" assumption in your post is pretty scary 😉

even a small (by eztv standards) peer swarm would kill your line and azureus
client stone cold dead within minutes. it would be like actively asking for a
denial of service attack.

that aside, and despite the fact that just nominating yourself as an add-in
tracker isn't quite how the technicalities work, you *can* still be
very helpful.

make sure dht is turned on

that, coupled with peer exchange (pex), is hugely beneficial to a peer swarm
because it allows the torrent cloud to keep communicating for all participants
even when the central tracker is down or at it's load limits.

so remember everyone - turn dht on and tell all your friends. you'll
be doing the eztv community a real service 🙂

oh - and seed for as long as you possibly can, of course.
i'm sure you know that as obvious, but one can never stress it enough 🙂
the number of hit and run leechers out there is still huge.

if your *adsl* can handle 1 million peer (low avg) connections every minute i
will be very amazed 🙂

i'm also sure that you did not actually think that i was talking about taking
over the entire eztv tracking. ☹️

with just a humble adsl connection it is actually quite possible to handle
tracking for something like 100k nodes. and with 100 such humble adsl trackers
you could easily get a fully fledged tracker -- without the need for "generous
donations".

but, if y'all is not interested in distributed computing, i guess us users will
have to crawl back to our usual efforts (seed and dht as much as we can).

we don't want to offend people here who want to help out but tracking is not
that easy 😉

like novaking said you get a whole lot of connections and your line is getting
hammered like crazy ...

i am sure even with a good line that your isp will stop your connection in a
matter of hours as he thinks you are getting attacked ...

we really appreciate you people wanting to help but the best thing you can do is
apply the simple rules i put out in my other post and if you can you can support
us a bit financially so we can maintain trackers and setup extra hardware 😉

first of all, rest assured i'm not the least bit offended by the negative
response i got. i can really unterstand that you guys get a lot of stupid
suggestions, and that it's not that easy to maintain a "stiff upper lip". 🙂

but as far as the hammering is concerned, i'm not sure i can understand that
objection. ever since i made the playboy playmate section of my site publicly
available, i've been really "hammered" and i'm still on-line -- even after
playboy had their lawyers come after me.

what i really want to know, is if tracking is really that big an object --
bandwidth-wise -- as everyone claims. maybe it's not? maybe it's nothing more
than the 10-20 bytes per peer that we see when we seed?
