hello everyone..

this is a little of topic, you have helped me out before with other things.

the thing i need is some kind of program which will log the internet connection.

i'm with aol(uk) and the connection keeps turning off and on so many times in a
day that i sometimes locks the computer up and i need to reboot both the modem
and the computer.

i have been onto them about it and they say that they don't see anything wrong
with the line.

it seems to get worse when it's raining the only problem is it is intermittent.

that is the problem you see if i get an engineer out and they find nothing
wrong they will charge me 80.00 pounds for the call out and a further 50.00
pounds an hour.

i just need proof of the internet connection going on and off.

i'm on aol(uk) gold (2.2meg asdl line).

this is driving me mad having to reboot and re sign on to aol.

hope someone can point me in the right direction.

i have looked on the net but all i seem find is programs which logs the sits
that i have been to.

this is not really what i'm after i need a connection log that lets me know
when it has been connected and disconnected and for how long and when it
happens.

so thanks for reading and i hope someone can help me out with this.

many thanks & bye for now simon (uk) :-)..

best place to get useful line history information from is the router/modem
itself.

tell us what model you have.

the modem that comes from aol (bt voyager) is terrible, to get the best out of
the service i recomend you use a router, with this the main account will be
logged in all the time on the router, meaning you wont need to use the aol
software to access the internet,

but for ideal conditions, i reocomend that you change isp's, if you live in one
of the major cities then you should be able to get ukonline they are a great and
friendly isp,

if you want cheapness and have sky tv then get sky broadband,

if possible always try to use a router as your point of connection as this will
keep a track of your connection log, and means you can share your connection
around the house.

avoid the following isp's pipex, bulldog, demon and bt

much of what mlucifer says is true, but not immediately useful 😉

have a look at *www.eeggs.com/items/43481.html , and see if you can retrieve
some technical stats.

post 'em here, and we'll see if anything obvious leaps out.

thank you for getting back (kurai & mlucifer).

i will have a look at (eeggs.com) thanks.

i live in a small village but we have a telephone ext. round the corner so the
line will go up to 8meg but we have no cable yet just old telephone lines from
bt.

i think we have a (netgear router somewhere a (dg834gt)).

i will have a look for it but the thing is i remember it kept locking up.
aol said they did not support that router so we put the modem on they gave us.

thanks again for your help with this

bye for now (si)(uk):-)

sounds uncomfertable to me like malware namely a dialer. google for a malware
forum cause the one i go to is a dutch one so not very usefull to you. they
probably will ask you to make a hijack this log so you may want to google for
that in advance. with that information they can advice you how to proceed.
please dont work yourself with the hijack this log unless you are really sure.

@noes: let's not get ahead of ourselves here.

it would be better to find out what's really happening first before we all go
scooting off on a million random guesswork tangents.

i dont see my post as an overreaction. i recognized the problem (cause it
happened to me) and i was certainly helped by going to a malware forum. if it
isnt malware they will be able to exlude that if it is they can help him get
rid of it. also they often can after excluding software/malware problems give
you excellent advice on hardware problems at same forums.

thanks for all your help with this matter.
i will check the things you have said 1 by 1.

the connection got so bad we had to get an engineer out.
he found a fault with the line and installed a fresh line to the telephone pole.
but that didn't solve the problem.
he still could hear a fault on the line after the wire change so he checked the
wires at the pole then checked out a junction box half way to the exchange and
also the exchange itself.
he did as much as he could, but he said the fault would lie with the cable
underground.
that he couldn't do and would have to get an underground cable engineer out to
sort the fault out.
so i'm waiting for the next date for the other engineer that can sort the
underground fault out.

full marks tho,
he did do as much as he could that day and we got a fresh cable from the house
to the telephone pole.
also as he did find a fault with the line no fee was charge.

the british telecom engineer came across very helpful and to the point.
he didn't try to say it was our equipment at fault as we thought he might do.

thanks again for all your help.

bye for now (si)(uk) :-)

well for one it sucks that it is gonna be time consuming problem. but one of
the things you were afraid of that they would charge you to the hilt seems non
existent now. doesnt sound like the next engineer will charge if he is from
the same company.

let us know how it all ends.

ah, i am too late. same thing happened to me a while back - crackly line, and
worse when it rained. that is a sign of a break in the line (as we all realise
now)

bt couldn't solve mine after replacing oodles of line. when i moved (with the
same pc, modem, blah blah) i ousted that problem. (of course, as life can be
sucky, i gained other issues :-)

i hope it gets sorted. i also hope you manage to dump aohell for anyone else.

:)

thank you everyone for you input on this matter.

i think so far (bt engineers have been very good with this matter so far)
the problem is now they know it's underground are they going to be as good with
this now.
i live about half a mile (if that) from the exchange will they replace the
cable as the engineer told me that there was 2 spare lines left and his laptop
said they was both faulty and he had no more lines to change.

so in my book's that means (bt) are going to have to replace some of the cable
if not all the cable underground for us (ummm) i wonder what's going to happen
next.
