so if you really want to know what hdtv is about go use google, which most
likely will refer to a wikipedia article, explaining every damn detail about hdtv
after that you can, again without asking or telling us about it, decide for
yourself which version you want to download ...
but remember; nobody is actually interested which version you prefer or why ..

most of that info is still just the tip of the iceberg, i did not even mention
the 720p rips, which can be the same size of the original broadcast resolution
(if it was shown as 720p and not 1080i on hdtv), and encoded using x264, which
i think is now top rated in terms of mpeg4 compression (but requires a fair
chunk of processing power to decode/play).
then you have the rip and encode methods, single pass or duel pass encoding,
with various different settings that can effect the end result, in fact i think
sfm may have gone from single pass, to duel pass encoding a few episodes back,
there was a jump in picture quality in the rips at one point, the blacks are
now more solid and the picture looks less washed out.
for these ripping groups they must decided between a fast release, or higher
quality result, i'd personally rather wait a little longer...
also with dsr vs hdtv, it's not just the resolution of the source, it's also
about quality of the technology, hdtv has lots of features that make it a more
stable source to cap from, which helps give that better final result.
i'm not 100% sure on some of the specs of dsr, but i see lots of stuff in the
picture that can't happen in hdtv, almost analogue type artefacts that really
do ruin what should be a perfect picture.
i'm probably still only about half way there on my learning of the big picture,
but a little reading goes a long way to answering your questions if you have
them, above that there are guys around who will help, you just need to know
where to look and how to ask.

thirdly, taking my own advice and spending 10-20 seconds looking, i found
these:
no, the hr versions are twice the size, and often retain the original source
audio, which can be full 5.1 surround sound on some rips.
your typical 350mb rips end up being around 1000-1100kbs xvid video, and 110-
160kbs vbr mp3 audio, with a compressed vid size of around 624x352.
typical 700mb rips end up more like 2000kbs xvid video, usually source ac3
dolby 5.1 audio (depending on the ripper sometimes only 2 channel), with a
compressed vid size of around 960x528.
be aware though that neither is actually that close to true hdtv source, but
really most people would struggle to notice the difference with the hr
versions.
to give a little perspective, 350mb rips are not actually that bad, if you go
looking at movie rips, many won't even break the 800kbs video mark, and lets
be
honest, anything below 800 in xvid just kind of sucks.
my only gripe with 350 vs. 700 rips, is the audio, the current trend seems to
be all or nothing, ac3 audio is a big waste of space unless you 'really' want
5.1 dolby, and even then many 700 rips are not.
then you have the audio on 350 rips, which are hovering dangerously low at
around the 120kbs mp3 mark, i'd much rather see something averaging more in
the
140kbs range...

also:
the scifi bsg caps are from a digital satellite source; the skyone bsg caps are
from an hdtv source - *much* higher resolution.
it doesn't matter whether the resulting caps are both the same resolution. the
difference is what source the cap is made from. the better quality and higher
res the source, generally, the better the compressed cap will look.
if that's not clear, here's an example: lost and house look pristine because
they're capped from hdtv sources. the resolution in the 350mb download is
exactly the same as the bsg scifi dsr 350mb download - however the key
difference is that bsg is capped from a far lower resolution source (dsr) than
lost/house etc and makes a massive difference to the end product.
