neither my dvd player or archos player will play these 960 pixel width files.i
try to choose the smallest file-recently tho on lost 12 the small file wouldnt
play so i download the 750 mb size which was a 960-i had expected just the 1 gb
size to be that wide.
i cant believe i am the only person experiencing this problem-so please can we
have some less than 720 pixels.

besides the fact that moaning here of all places will get nothing done.
it's like moaning to your friends that tax prices are too high -- you're moaning
to the wrong person.

maybe i did not express myself that well.i think that maybe, and i could be
wrong, 960 pixels width is for the minority.if so it would be great to confine
it to the larger file versions.certainly here in the uk it is not readily
playable on our dvd recorders.i was also very surprised to learn that they wont
play on an archos player either.i suppose it wouldnt be a problem if i could
get to grips with agk-i am trying.

it is only the larger (hr and 720p) files that have the resolution you are
"complaining" about.
just stick to the 350mb (and some british 700mb) rips and you'll be fine.

i did and do not remember having trouble.

i saw lots of complaining about the last 350mb lost ... dunno what they were on
about either 'cause it played fine here as well.

i'd say always stick with those 350mb files, pollywollydo, cause i doubt the
scene is going to make smaller higher res versions :s as it would totally
defeat the purpose, would it not? personally id love to download the 720p
stuff but i would quickly run out of my monthly bandwidth limit considering all
the tele shows eztv has me hooked on now (yes, its your fault eztv!!). and
anyway the 350mb files are just dandy on my tele. 🙂

sometimes you gotta live with anomolies ... like, i have some seasons
of "charmed" for my daughters that work fine in some players (whether they be
computer or set-top-boxes) and are totally out of sync on others. granted we
have the option of trying several different players about the house til we find
one that works, but ultimately they arent store-bought dvds so im not about to
go and complain to the encoder.

reading or asking questions in the forums that come with associated shows is
the best way to get tips and ideas as to the quality/compatibility of a file -
there was heaps of advice on the last lost episode as to how to re-encode the
file to make it work properly. sometimes it also pays to wait just a half hour
longer in case a proper is released.

anyway good luck in future ... but can i suggest that you just dont download
high res versions cause then you wont have to complain about them in future. 😉

i feel i should add something else to this convo which ive discovered ... this
may not totally relate to pollywolly's issue, but its something ive noticed of
late.

considering my access to 5 different brand set-top dvd dvix players and three
pcs (two running win media player 11 and one running wmp 10), im compelled to
mention the issue of compatibility. what ive discovered, in particular with
the "charmed" series i mentioned previously, is that wmp11 (obviously with dvix
codec installed) seems to run all files flawlessly, while the kids wmp10 (which
ive neglected to update - naughty mummy 😛) is always out of sync. files will
often crash or be out of sync on wmp10 and other players, while wmp11 kicks
arse - always - gee thats a first for microsoft wouldnt u say? 😛 im thinking
this is an issue related to authentication? (one cannot run wmp11 without
authentication). it seems to be when everyone else is having issues, my wmp11
plays the file without a hitch. am i just lucky? can anyone else confirm?

as for the set-top boxes ... we have two boxes that run most files perfectly
fine, while the others (older models) are either out of sync, are skipping and
pixelating, or just cant play the files at all. these are straight
downloads ... no re-encode or nothing. these two players also play some ac3
files - but not all. still, i think thats pretty good considering ac3 is a
particularly picky audio format.

ultimately i think its a matter of trying different players (set-top or pc
software) until u find one that works. i understand tho that not everyone has
the option of several players, but it may help us to understand why many people
are having problems, while others arent.

but what are some other opinions here? does anyone else concur with my
discovery between the two windows media players? what about ur settop boxes ...
do you find some work flawlessly everytime, while others $#!+ the bed? again, i
stress the point of compatibility ... i figure that, obviously, newer players
will play more formats while older ones may not. im also thinking many peoples
are still trying to play their files on wmp10?

i do a lot of transcoding to dvds for friends and have never
got a complaint ....
convertxtodvd

ive got 8 kids ... i wish they were patient enough to wait for re-encoded
stuff! lol. to tell the truth ... wish i was patient enough to wait! anyway i
just burn straight data dvd discs with nero and most often the settop boxes
play without probs ... no need to convert the files. but as i said, we have
multiple settop boxes to choose from til one worx. still ... ive not had to
convert a file for two years years now ... am i just lazy? 😛

ooo ... we've used a prog called streamer p2p to stream video across the
internet but success was dependant on the upload capacity of other users also.
worked well with the right connection speeds and settings. id like to know
more about this ethernet thru the powerlines setup tho. tell me more ... 🙂

very spiffy ... will be looking more into this for certain! my hubby says that
we aussies are yet to have this technology tho ☹️ and that it is dependent on
our electricity provider? with all the current cables and crap in our place, we
are very interested in the capabilities of this tech - looks a lot easier to
implement and certainly an improvement on our current setup!

yes, reading more into the info on those links ... i see now ... its lan - but
utlising the powerlines rather than network cables - nice! my hubby mentions he
has heard there is some new powerline technology setup for the internet too? im
imagining this would be hella fast also.

i had 3 files last week that wouldn't play on my divx/dvd player but were fine
on my pc (all 350mb). the problem seems to be just with the audio not the video.

my quick fix was to use virtualdub to save the audio as a wav, convert that to a
cbr mp3 then use virtualdub again to switch the original vbr mp3 audio to the
new cbr. no need to convert the video so only takes about 5mins per file.

someone else posted this method of fixing:

1 get and open nandub (if you dont have it try google)
2 open the original file
3 go to video - direct stream copy
4 go to audio - direct stream copy
5 go to audio - intervaling - set preload 0 / intervaled audio every 1 / delay 0
6 file - save as avi...

this may be easier but i haven't tried it as i'd already deleted all the
'broken' files.
