BitTorrent Ports Blocked

hey guys, just wondered if someone could help me out here.

my friend is living on campus at university, and is trying to use bittorrent.
the trouble is, the university network security is tight when it comes to open
ports, and none of the ports tried seem to work. my guess is they've only opened
the commonly used ports (smtp, hxtp, ftp etc.)

is there any way that anyone can think of, of either masking the port to
"pretend" to be hxtp/ftp traffic, or any other way of using bittorrent, ie.
totally web-based client (as opposed to utorrents web ui).

been sratching our heads for months now, hoping someone here has overcome the
same issues in the past.

i don't know for sure but somewhere saw a comment regarding uni students and
the encryption mode selected using utorrent being effective, but don't quote
me on it -edit, maybe for dht use unsure, its all still a blur


ps, 30th and even the 31st piece of pb 0220 are up now . . . .

depends on his universities network setup really. sometimes encryption will
work, sometimes just changing the port will. the big thing is if his
universities network team are even remotely competent they'll notice the
traffic (unencrypted or not, just as long as it's too much) and disable his
port. if they've gone to the trouble to lock things down, they're basically
saying don't.

theres always "http tunnel" program...google that

it reroutes all your traffic through port 80

buy it or you will get 1.5 kb/s
i haven't found any way to get around this, if you know what i mean 😉

http tunnelling seems to be the most viable option, because even if we found an
open port, rumour has it that the security team runs an application which
searches for ports being used by students, and if it's not a "legit" port, it's
automatically blocked, and closing port 80 would be, well, idiotic. so that
seems the best thing to do.

you dont need to pay for http tunneling software just use putty.

the easier more windows friendly method is vpn. you can set up a vpn server on a
computer out side the network and connect through that but that isnt the best
for speed.

there is also some services that provide secure tunneling through them which may
work for your too. you can always download from other sources like newsgroups
which can go really fast at school unrestricted but its not free.

the reason why most universities are so hot on this is because the mpaa/riaa
will go after them rather than the individuals.

one way that might work is to use some of the ports used in online gaming,
battlenet ect. they do open some of them.

but as someone else has said, if the it services department is any good they
will catch you no matter what

hey yall! i just switched from comcast to embarq internet and now i'm having
trouble downloading stuff. i think i need to open a port but i dont know what
one. if someone could tell me that would be amazing. or if there are any other
suggestions.

changing isp wont block any ports but they might shape your download rate when
they detect bittorrent etc

open the port your client is using?

use bitcomet and route over the university http proxy works just fine for me
