just curious, but does anyone know:

1) how the torrent naming standard was agreed upon? (specifically, did scenes
got together on one #channel and debated it?)

2) when did it start?

3) did it have a precursor?

thanks much.

if i remember corectly the rumor was that lol stareted it.
but you also need to know torrents have nothing to do with how the releases are
named. the scene was here before torrents ever existed.

most of it is just logical progression from age old scene conventions, going
back to the days of pre-internet (well ... pre `general public home internet
access` anyway) bbses/fidonet etc.

as the years went on, and available bandwidth increased, scene groups moved on
from the era of data sets that would fit on a series of floppies to cd, and
later dvd sized data, which made distributing music, movies and tv more
practicable.

the plethora of available formats and packing methods and the nature of `hub`
ftp topsites meant that distribution conventions tended to converge on a
series of informal popular standards that allowed good consistency and
interoperability and, thereby, reliable automation.

major software/games/demo releases got standardised very early - i remember
things being pretty consistent even in the mid to late 80s. standards got
properly `formalised` across wide networks of groups (as opposed to internal
individual group standards) for mp3s in the mid 90s, then was adapted
for movies roundabout 1998, and tv got rolled into it shortly after.

at the bottom it says who created it, the groups so i take it they said this it
final. and now thats the way it is.
