there has been some discussion on the threads of the hbo shows about potential
problems people are running into regarding these shows. wondered the truth of
this. google search shows talk about this kind of thing goin back 2-3 years
(one blog had post from 2004). i wondered the general consensus of the
sitaution, the danger involved, real or perceived, and potential repurcussions.

it is true.

one should always protect themselves as much as possible when dealing with
torrents. it should be a well known rule, if you don't want to get caught, why
would you not do research on how to protect yourself from such things...

i still find it amusing how many people (mainly comcast customers) still get
caught. well, means more bandwidth to people who deserve it 🙂

i've downloaded tons of hbo, and my isp has never given me shit, about anything
at all actually. could be that i am dsl instead of cable though, cable
companies are gonna cave in to hbo a lot faster.

i do believe people are probably getting warnings but i'm just not sure we need
to have warnings on every posted hbo torrent which then turns into an
extraneous discussion on things like 'here's what my letter said' and 'use
peerguardian' etc. btw if someone wants to get you they can surely figure out
to hire someone or use ip's that aren't blocked so i don't even worry about
it. if you download you should know there's a risk. bottom line. i wish the
hbo warnings could be laid to rest.

yeah the companies know about the softwares and know that some of their ips are going to be blocked...
its been said somewhere around 75-80% effective... but there is no way to stop risking getting a letter
sent to you besides not downloading.

there is always a risk and hbo is one of the more aggressive companies doing the lawsuits and such.

if your really worried the only way is using things like proxy's (using another connection to get the files
instead of your own) -- its a rather big hassle and something that most people don't have access to do
just because they don't know anyone in countries that don't care about file sharing.

well, i use peer guardian and still have gotten a letter, so this is not the end
all protection.

why dont l33t torrenters share their knowledge and teach/show/tell which
programs can be
good to avoid that. we have to remember that we are an illegal community
(lol)... and helping eachother is the only thing that can keep us alive. :d

i've had no problem downloading hbo shows at all...
altho, it's not well known but in canada torrents are not illegal, so there's
no problem with anything. the only thing that can happen is your isp can
moniter the amount you download and put a cap on it preventing you from
downloading past their set amount of kb.

go canada

it is true canada certainly had great foresite when implementing their
copyright laws. bravo that govts can exist that make somewot sensible
decisions. so other than moving to canada, wot else can u do?
well, peerguardian was mentioned earlier ... and tho it may be only "75-80%
effective" ... its better than nothing. i use utorrent, but im not all that
savvy with the software ... it would be nice if someone could explain the
peerlist blocker to us goldfish. i know it auto blocks on numerous
hashfails ... but obviously u are talking about something beyond this, santa?

other than that i think ur isp loyalty plays an important part in all of
this. basically get a good isp who is more interested in keeping its
customers happy rather than the mpaa et al. we definately have this issue in
oz ... some isps will giv up their customers the moment they sniff a naughty
download, others wont. its all about researching and shopping around for the
right provider i spose.

peerguardian doesn't work. i recently was sent a email and had my internet
connection shut down. they (time warner road runner) got me for downloading
"rome" and "heroes". i had to call to get my internet connection turned on again. ☹️

most all these letter claims i must call bullshit on. for the simple fact that
up until the last few months i've been believing the hype generated by people
about the dreaded letter or even worst a the sue you letter.

for many years now i've been p2ping and mostly in a novice way and i have yet to
loss my service or other valuables. i even once messed up and told a tech at
my dsl provider that i needed help setting up my router for better p2p service
and they were unconcerned by it. and trust me the internet is our families only
source for tv. we use it for more control of what our kids watch. so i'd say
we're seeding and download alot each day. not saying getting caught couldn't
happen. however in my opinion if their was less braggerts on the internet then
real reports of concern would be heeded.

so to all those trying to fit in with bs stories, please be more like me and
proud of not being a wannabe nabbed surfer.

switch to a good usenet payserver if security/privacy is an issue. companies
like giganews or usenetserver offer 256 bit ssl encryption.

of course that will cost you $: you can't get a free ride and good
security/privacy...the max. download speed is of course a very nice bonus too
and you won't upload 1 byte

bs stories? not at all, i have gotten 2 letters. both at different times for
hbo show. i have not had any service turned off but i also don't want to get
more, as i would assume that my isp would shut me off if i got more (both were
apart by a bunch of time).

funny thing is, the letter from my isp in it's way had no problem with the
downloading, just the uploading part.
