hi,
i'm currently downloading a number of tv shows off the eztv rss feed using
utorrent (1.61). everything else is working fine, but there's one particular
show i'm having problems with. the filter for it looks like this (without the
quotation marks, obviously):

filter: "heroes*|*hr*"
not: "*720p*"
quality: hdtv, dsrip, hr.hdtv

(i'm also filtering the feed based on episode numbers, but that's hardly relevant.)

my problem is that with the abovementioned filter, i've succesfully downloaded
such tv shows as 24, the new adventures of old christine, rome and jericho.
also, when heroes returned yesterday, utorrent decided to download both the hr
version and the normal hdtv version.

can anyone point out a mistake in my filter that lets all of the unwanted shows
creep through?

thanks, will try it out.

as for why it didn't happen with the others, i have a hunch: i only download
them in the standard hdtv format, and many of them are only uploaded in one format.

i think and as usual kurai help me... that you need to have it
as: filter: "heroes*hr*" ...looks like will get anything heroes or anything hr
whereas my modif will get what has heroes and hr in the string. at which point
you can remove the not entry and set quality to all.

i'm still fairly new to the rss thing..so lemme see if i understand. if i want a
show, say your example of heroes above and i want hr but not 720 or anything of
lesser quality, i just add the *hr* next to heroes in the filter line, eliminate
my *ac3*|*264*|*720* in the not line and set to all quality?

yes, many dumbasses about indeed.

anyway, back to the original topic, the suggested filters worked like a charm:
utorrent started downloading only one torrent during the week, and it was the
right one, hr version of heroes. watching american tv is now insanely easy for
people living abroad - or more specifically, for me.

thank you.

oooh if you like heroes you might wanna give jericho a try, its one of those
'suck ya in' type dramas. its great. 🙂

i've got one that may be of use to other people as well.

utorrent doesn't have the option to "set state to" like az. if, like me, you
want to add torrents, but not start downloading them, this is what the utorrent
faq says (i haven't tested this yet).

"if you want the torrents to automatically download and start without any
further input, you must specify a folder in save in:! however, if you have a
path set in "put new downloads in:" in folder options, you don't have to set a
save folder here."

by reverse logic, this would mean that if you do not have a directory set in
either of these two places you get a torrent added, but it doesn't start
downloading immediately. my assumption at this stage is that when you tell it to
start it's gonna ask you "where am i supposed to save this file?"

i'll let you know if this works.

well it sort of worked, but not in a useable way.

i set up three shows that came up yesterday while i was at work. when i got
home there was a standard "where to save this file" screen. i chose my
destination and hit ok, expecting the next one to pop up, but no such luck.

as you said aydin, i think the others just timed out due to lack of response -
they would have been there for five or six hours probably.

bugger!

i wonder if mr micro hangs around here? "hey matey, i've got a new feature for
you to implement."

... an do a search for something like "automatic rss" to discover that about ten
million people have been asking about this. apparently it worked in v1.5 using
the "don't start the download automatically" general option, then got lost in
upgrade .

been fixed in 1.7 beta, so i just upgraded and all is cool. prompted for each
match - and lucky because it picked up the hr and normal version of each match
despite having hr* in the not line.

first good boy that you follow the rss tutorial to the letter, second i think i
found a typo and it is supposed to be *hr* so that it spots hr with
preceding and following strings.... will correct.

are you supposing i'm a boy? haha - got ya. i haven't been called a boy since
before the operation.

yes i did wonder about the lack of asterisk before the hr, but i just cut and
pasted, as i am sure many people did. i was thinking i should be tricky and use
a regular expression with something like (\.) {that is bracket slash dot
bracket} but then found in the utorrent doco that it does not use regular
expressions.

(born in '68, i ain't no boy anymore ... except on the inside)
