what's up everyone? i wanted to share some valuable information for a little
test i preformed with my standalone

divx player.

intro:
pretty much, i have had a philips divx player for about 3 years and as awesome
as it is, it doesn't play some files

from some groups. what i did was go through all my files, took one file from
each group (lol, notv, and so on) and

burned them onto disc. next i watched 30 seconds of each file to ensure proper
playback. if there where any flaws

(outside of why files are given proper releases...so in this case, fuzzy
playback, no sound, and no playing at all)

they made the not supported list. if everything worked fine, that group made
they supported list. so here are the

list (please feel free to add to this list...i will update it...assuming this
doesn't become a sticky):

supported:
orenji
omicron
aerial (24 dvd rips from earlier this year)
bia
dimension
2hd & 2sd (same group, just one for sd releases and one for hd releases)
sfm
hv
xor
fov (newer rips, i have had problems with house season one rips from them about
2 years ago, as almost anything by fov in 2004 will probably not work)
notv
fqm
caph
sorny
crimson
yestv
thor
saints
affinity
carat
river
mint
fbn
frubsen
442
abt
topaz (for their season releases...had a few problems with screeners from last
year...see friday night lights)
fpn
bluetv
wslr
nfe
loki
lol
kyr
aaf
umd

not supported:
memetic (the other group that propered the 24 dvd rips)
porndoctor
bamhd
n3y
dgas
rentboys
octavian
crntv

again some of you (including me) may have problems with last years screeners
from topaz and older fov releases from

2004. i am not 100% sure when fov stopped using qpel, but i did notice it this
year.

final notes:
just to make sure anyone who reads this understands, i am from the us, so my
player is ntsc and it is made by philips.

and because my player is by philips, this list may not apply to you if you have
a different player. if anyone does

have a different player and has a similar list, drop me a line and i will be
more than happy to keep a second list.

so there you go. if you have questions, additions, comments...and so on, please
by all means send me a message or

reply to this thread.

thanks

mac norton

i have, from australia

cobolt dvd-880 $49 3 years

conia m560 $29 1 year

that have both played all 350mb files i have played in them, as well as all
700mb movies off all cdr dvd-r dvdrw

i also came accross one of those digital photo frames (cobolt $59), that also
plays all 350mb files i have tried in it straight off the 2gb and the 8gb
thumb drive

i have had a philips dvp-642 player for about three years and i consider it
long obsolete and inferior to other cheap players available.

philips is still selling this player and i don't think anyone should ever buy
it because:

- does not support gmc and qpel (many cheap players do);
- does not display lfn (long file names);
- we need to see more than 13 characters to see the tiles on divx & mp3s.
- while it plays mp3 on dvd, it has trouble when you put a lot on one dvd as
it does not appear to have the processing power other cheap players do.
- it does not allow you to key in a number larger than 999 to go directly to a
mp3 tract above that number. as you can put 1,400 or more tracks on one sl
dvd, it makes the higher number tracks almost impossible to get to.

i suggest you take a disk with the hard to play files with you and test any
prospective player in the store. just because it says it is divx certified
does not mean that it will play the hard to play files i mention.

i have two other cheap dvd players that both handle mp3s in large quantities
and qpel/gmc very well: yahoo ydp540 and the diamond vision dvdv 811x-03.

the yahoo player also takes usb flash drives and standard memory cards sd etc.

i am still not totally satisfied as either of these players as they do not
display lfns, long file names which is a pain if you put a lot of xvids/divx
or mp3 on dvds like i do.

i have also heard that the philips dvp 5900 handles long file names, divx,
qpel, gmc and large numbers of mp3s on dvds well but i have never tested one.

i urge you to dump your philips 642 if you are having the problems i mention
above as there are players for less than $50 that are far better.

if anyone has a stand alone player that meets my requirements: lfn display +
plays divx, qpel & gmc, please post information about it.

well every player wich uses the zoran v8 chip does it. apart from the long file
names wich is in the hands of the distributor.

some thing to mention - i didnt found a standalone player yet at all who can
play gmc in xvid's well. in divx it seems no problem but its diffrent for xvid
(since its 3 warp points).
