so, i am currently on a business trip with my new laptop.... i have a few
shows i would like to watch but can't.

vista's default windows media player won't work.

but i anticipated that so i brought my nero 7 ultra install disks with me.
known compatibility issues that won't let me install.

so atm i am stuck with no viewer.

any vista users out there that can steer me in the right direction for a decent
viewer????

vlc or mpc should work on vista? *don't run vista, so i would have no real idea*

vlc player works great, no tweaking required, also solves that hdcp problem some
may have had when trying to view dvds.

i am using ultimate, wouldn't think that should make a difference though.

i didn't have any problems installing nero 7.

i'm actually using ultimate too, with a geforce 7300gs
video card
(i point out
the video card, cause maybe that's whats making aero and vlc not play well
together).

i first used ati x800, recently upgraded to x1950, no problems with either.

there's nothing wrong with vista's media player. it can play every file you
get of this site. you just haven't intalled the right codecs. try installing
divx or/and xvid.

install this if you think it\'s a codec problem:

thanks.... that seemed to do the trick.

still confused about vista and the media player...when i first tried to play a
file a message popped up saying that the required codec was found. so i didn't
even think that would have been the problem.

( and nero refused to install....tried at 4 times and hangs up at same spot. )

that could have been the sound codec.

vista's media player is no different from xp's when it comes to supported file
types.

if \'user account control\' is enabled, have you tried right clicking the
installation file and running as administrator?.

i found most of my problems went away after disabling \'user account control\'.

try gom player.. its what i use in vista, works fine.

mpc also should work.

all that and it was codecs. don't people check the basics anymore? (ie,
instaling the most basic two packages that allow playback on 95% of files)

use mpc (media player classic) with the latest 'tryouts' version of ffdshow from
sourceforge.

vlc does indeed have issues with vista aero and while it can be fixed in config.
it's honestly not as good as the above combo.

for people who don't know what player/codecs to use
i highly reccommend http://www.cccp-project.net/

it has codecs, zoom player & wmplayer classic included with it

i watch a lot of anime using cccp and never had a problem with video files since
avi/mkv/ogm/mp4, name it...it probably plays em

also download the latest version of nero from their site... it's supposed to be
vista compatible, then use your product key that you've got with your disk...
should work...
