File name acronyms, please explain.

hi all,

first post so please be gentle.....

ok. i\'m downloading heroes from eztv. (sometimes linked from mininova, and
elsewhere.) and i can see that all the torrents have a bunch of acronyms in the
file name. some of them i can work out, some of them mean nothing to me. for
example, there are 2 torrents posted for heroes episode 22: -

heroess01e22.hdtv.xvid-lol.avi

heroess01e22.hr.hdtv.xvid-nbs.avi

s01e22 - series 1, episode 22
hdtv - capped at high-def resolution
xvid - codec used
lol - ??
nbs - ??
hr - ??

can someone explain the difference between these files? if you could provide a
list of common file name acronyms that would be helpfull to me.

lol/nbs: the group that released the file
hr.hdtv: high-resolution hdtv, 540p (960*540 pixels)
720p.hdtv: "real" hdtv, 720p (1280*720 pixels)

you usually can't play hr and 720p files on a dvd-player.

there are a few more that i dont understand and a few i think i do: -

720p - 720 line progressive (standard hd.)
ac3 - audio codec
divx - video codec
h264 - ??container thingy for video and audio, dont really get this.??
notv - ??
pdtv - ??
ws - ??
dsr - ??
safjmu - stupid acronym feckless just made up

also just to be clear. the final part of the filename is the group that
released the torrent?

notv - release group
pdtv - pure digital tv
ws - widescreen
dsr - digital satellite rip


releases are usually in this format

tvshowname.sxxexx.source.videocodec-releasegroup

tvshowname - name of the tv show 😛
sxxexx - season and episode number
source - what source the show was capped from (ie, hdtv/pdtv/dsr etc)
videocodec - usually xvid or 264
releasegroup - scene group that released the file
