ok, so i\'m new to this. and i tried to download the latest episode of heroes
and so i got utorrent and all that and i downloaded [1] and [2]. they are
fully downloaded, but when i try to play them (on media player) it doesn\'t
work!!?

what do i do??

oh, and while i\'m here. what is a torrent?

like i said, i\'m new. :/

wow, you are new.

first thing to say is that you didn't need to download both [1] and [2] they are
both the same thing and if one is down, you can move on to the other. second
thing is that all the video files out there are compressed using a codec (which
stands for compressor/decompressor) because raw video files are huge and
unfeasible to send over the internet. computers don't just come with all the
codecs you need to view these files. i would suggest that you get a video
playing program that does like the one i use vlc (videolan.org/vlc) or media
player classic (www.free-codecs.com/download/media_player_classic.htm) .

thirdly and finally, a torrent is...you know, just go read this
(en.wikipedia.org/wiki/bittorrent)

pretty much what was said above,
you could try looking for the codec or downloading a bunch so it works in
medica player, ac3 is prolly what you'll need. alternatively get vlc player

i'd suggest you download peer guardian too, http://phoenixlabs.org/pg2/

also, ignore anyone that flames you 🙂

nothing against the original poster but perhaps when signing up to this site,
during the sign-up process could it direct you to a page which lists commonly
asked questions about downloading from this site ? ie how do i.....? what is a
.....? etc

just a thought.....

yes, but...isn't that the first thing most sensible people do - check the help
files out? only the lazy don't bother and post.

that maybe the 'sensible' thing to do but its clear from the amount of questions
being asked in the forums that 'most' people ask the type of question that could
be easily answered in the faq section of this site or on wikipedia or on about a
million other easily accessible sites.

when signing up, it could take you to a commonly asked question page that you
have to read/scroll through in order to complete the signing on process.....

yes !

if you can't answer the 5 (?) easy questions then you can't sign up !

lol

as far as codecs go, i'd download the latest versions of the ac3 codec and
xvid codec. just google them to find a download site.

took you 28 minutes to get an answer for your question, it would have taken you
2 minutes to read the helpfull links for newbies post kindly written by aydin...

except that would've involved me knowing about that post. i didn't know at
the time what a "newbie" was. of course i know now, after being called that
many times througout this post. however, i wouldn't have known what a newbie
was if i hadn't posted this question. so... ?

and the fact that i've noticed other's have posted the same question as me
many times tells me that i'm not the only one that didn't know what a "newbie"
is....

so, maybe we could solve this mis-communication problem by changing the title
of the "newbie" post?
