well, now that i saw all the third season of lost i want to make a dvd
collection
i don't know if i should download the 720p version or the 700mb one because i'm
going to burn it on dvd and i heard it is better to download the 700mb version
if i'm going to burn it on dvd but i don't know yet.
is 720p version way better than the 700mb version if i'm going to burn it on
dvd?

"you cannot burn hd 720p versions to dvd if you are going to transcode them as i
suspect instead of just saving the files."

yes, sorry. i think i meant that

"to transcode on dvd the 350 mb versions are more then adequate."

are you sure that's the best option?

for most shows i settle for the 350mb ones for transfer to dvd and these are fine.

however, i do go for the 720p releases of heroes.
there is a noticeable difference in visual quality even after the transfer.

the 350mb ones are perfectly adequate for most. the 700mb are the next best
thing to the 720p ones and are much simpler to use. the 720p files take a bit of
work to get them to the format required for dvd.

best results for me have been converting the hr.hdtv files using
convertxtodvd, the 350s are ok but there is a clear difference in quality, and
u usually get 5.1 sound too.

pictures on the 720p mkvs are awesome, and u get great results there when
downscaling but almost every mkv ive converted in convertxtodvd has had sync
problems.

just get the 72op versions if u can watch em in pure high def is my advice, if
u r converting to sd then i recommend the hr.hdtv 700 mb files over the 350mb
versions, like i say, a clear difference in quality everytime.

even when disregarding resolution, still dont do the 350mb files. they have 2ch
mp3 audio while the hr files have 5.1 dolby digital which is what you definitely
want for dvd video.
dvd resolution is 853x480 (after anamorphic stretch, 720x480 originally) so the
960x528 resolution of the hr files are definitely a good choice.
i dont transcode these so i dont know if using the 720p 1.07gb files will make a
difference in quality when converted to dvd.

btw, if you didn't know, best ar setting is the 16:9 one

i also want to chime in on this.
i prefer the dvd season purchased from the store, but it takes soooo long for
them to make it to dvd. so, i make temp seasons until they come out.

i use convertxtodvd to burn my eps, and the 350mb works the best for me
because you really don't loose much quality. of course you don't get the 5.1
that you get with the 700mb, but that's really all you loose.

the benefit of the 350mb is that (atleast with convertx) you can fit 3 eps per
disc with menus.

with the 700, you may be able to fit 2 eps, but you're going to loose quality.

that's my take on the whole thing.

as an aside, something i noticed today was that the 700mb sized episodes of
atlantis have regular sound (mp3) but the 350mb sized ones have dolby digital
5.1 surround (ac3). this i only noticed as i got the correct cable to connect my
notebook to my amp.

this is also true of sg1, although not for heroes. but something else i noticed
on heroes was the volume level is a lot higher on 350mb than the 700mb version.

havent noticed much difference between 700mb and 350mb for viewing purposes
until i connect my notebook to my 32" lcd screen. i have then noticed subtle
differences, scenes that have water or trees or hard reds, often pixelate or
look like the xvid algorithm lost the plot whilst encoding.

if you are looking to burn as a vob file i would use the 700mb if quality is
your concern, and choose some good encoding software, to boot! (some programs
are really quite poor and some just take forever, for no reason but to p##s you
off, and then the results arent that great).

bye
