converting .mkv to .avi (XviD)

if anyone happens to know how to do this, i was wanting to convert "top chef"
poseted on mininova from .mkv to .avi (xvid) format. there has been a posting
of a .avi format on demonoid but this does not work on my current player nor
does g-spot recognize the format. i have had a look at the newbie info posted
here but i didn't find how to do this. any help would be greatly appreciated.

virtualdubmod and avisynth can get it done
of course other stuff that should already be on your computer is haali media
splitter, coreavc or something for x264, xvid codec

you can use this command with avisynth to get x264 files is vdubmod. (making a
file in notepad called file.avs, put that line with the correct name, open avs
file in vdubmod)

then click video >> fast recompass.
video >> compression, set to 1stpass, ok everything file >> save. check dont run
now... >> ok
video >> compression, set video to 2ndpass and enter in either a bitrate or
video file size in kb/s. ok everything. file >> save >> ok.
file >> jobs >> start
let the encoding run
delete first file
keep 2nd file
