i belong to more than 1 private sites and have been getting warnings from all of
them regarding utorrent 1.7. nearly all of them no longer accept it as usable bt
program on their trackers now.

the consensus is that it is no longer safe to use. here is something i grabbed
off a forum on one of the sites.

" the basic assumtion is that the bittorrent founder and ludvig (ludde)

*shrug*

it's like the old saying : "a lie can travel half way around the world while
the truth is putting on its shoes."

people will always tend to believe, and spread, a bit of juicy unfounded
gossip rather than take even the most basic steps to relieve their ignorance
by checking the facts.

well... paranoid or not, there was a bug in the 1.7.1 release that reported
the stats wrong and leaked peer info. this has been reported to be fixed in
1.7.2 recently released so the "paranoids" were in fact correct regarding 1.7.1

personally, 1.7 is banned on the #1 site i visit so i stick 1.6.1 which is still
accepted everywhere i visit. if that version were banned somewhere i'd have to
weigh the sites and make a decision but till then i'll just stick with what works.

my one beef with azureus is that it's so bloated now. utorrent it fairly
compact by comparison.

one of my private websites doesn't allow utorrent on it, so i had to re-download
azureus, and couldn't believe how much other stuff is included in it now.

no, the bug was in 1.7 and was fixed immediately with the 1.7.1
release. and this has been covered already. god damn unwarranted paranoia...

as aydin quoted from the changelog i was half right... i thought both bugs were
fixed in 1.7.2 whereas one was fixed in 1.7.1 and the other in 1.7.2

but if it was accepted on all the sites i visit i'd upgrade but it's not whereas
1.6.1 is. if that changed and i had to choose between staying for some sites and
upgrading for others it would depend on which sites need what and i'd weigh the
options.

i don't believe azureus is "bloated" by any means. i've been using it
exclusively for so long i forgot when i started using it. works perfectly, it's
not a cpu or ram hog, and no worries.

i watch tv shows on a modded xbox running xbmc, after using bittorrent to
download them.

fair use allows a person to use a vcr, dvr, or "other recording device" to
record broadcast tv shows to watch at a later date. i receive cable tv
channels legally, via my cable provider.

under fair use regs (which came about in the '70s in response to the emerging
vcr trend), bittorrent, my modded xbox, and my pc qualify as an "other
recording device". so does my tivo.

ergo, using bittorrent to download tv shows is *not* illegal nor punishable by
law.

as for the mpaa or hollywood "sending letters", i dare them to. in fact, i look
forward to getting one and challenging them in court. they *might* be able to
get me on downloading movies, but on tv shows, they have no argument.

sorry but you're talking crap. azerus is a ressource hog, terribly so. ok if
that's all you use your pc for, but if you like gaming with it in the background
forget playing any cpu/ram intensive games. utorrent still the best, though i
haven't tried this new 1.7 release yet. 1.6 works just fine so i'll be sticking
with that

i started off with azureus and liked it, but i decided to check out utorrent
anyway. utorrent does use less resources, is smaller, and i noticed my downloads
were faster with it. i definitely prefer utorrent, although i do miss a few
features from azureus. so i finally uninstalled azureus a few months back.

b--soup has banned utorrent 1.7, so i just did a search for one of those sites
that carry old versions of programs and put utorrent 1.6 back on the computer.
they still allow utorrent 1.6, so problem solved. (for now, anyway.)

azureus rocks and it gave me a great excuse to get t3's!

try halite it's open source and as small as utorrent, less features at present
time though.

this is why you should use open source! imagine trusting your encryption to the
whim of some corporations.

i use rtorrent on linux

as for morality / legality i pay a hefty monthly satellite subscription to
receive a dozen or so movie channels and all the tv shows in digital quality. i
just want them in a convenient format without drm.

swag: your tivo may qualify, but unless your "fair use regs" allow you to
*distribute* tv show or movies, your bt client disqualifies your "other
recording device".
