just a thought:

people who don't really care about quality or have limited bandwith or are
otherwise restricted by their isp (max. download per month) probably go for the
350mb versions.

people who do care about quality and are not restricted will go for the 700mb
or the 1100mb version.

i think most of the latter group will go for the 1100mb, simply because the
quality is even better.

wouldn't that make the 700mb version a bit unnecessary. either you go for low
bandwith usage or high quality.

if you should agree and stop distributing these releases (if an 1100mb version
is even available of course), this would free up bandwith of you initial
seeders for maybe even more shows in the 1100mb format for us to enjoy.

maybe i'm way off base here, but i'm wondering what other people might think
and if there is a reason for the 700mb versions i haven't considered.

some could even say extremely off base. not all systems can even handle 720p yet.

and we have the numbers to prove it 🙂

@ santa: but i don't have those numbers, do i?

@novaking: ok, point taken. it was just a thought, as i said. hadn't thought
about the systems that couldn't handle it though. that's why i asked if there
was a reason i haven't considered yet.

next time, let me down easy, will ya 🙂

i grab the 350mb versions with a computer capable of playing the x264 releases,
and a 32" hdtv; simply because i don't care for a huge different in quality for
40m of entertainment, with an added 4x download wait. when i put something on
download, i'm concious of it ending, i'm not one for waiting lengthy times.

but of course, everyone has a different reason for what they download and some
peopls views wont be reflective in the majority.

it's also worth noting that statistics can proove anything 😉

if you want it fast then youll want the scene to stop xvid completely and use
h264 for normal shows as well they could get the same quality in h264 for about
200mb instead of 350mb for 45 mins seeding would be so much easyer.

it's always good to have a read of the questions for newbies (regardless of
whether you are or not!!) in the admin corner of the forum. it has alot of
commonly asked questions (including
720p description)

in a nutshell, quality.

i apologize to everyone here.
i didn't mean to start this whole debate again about what everyone thinks is
better. people download different versions for different reasons.
all i was wondering about was the middle version (without judging one way or
the other), which santabj and novaking have explained to me as to why it is
still distributed.

fair enough, point taken and end of discussion as far as i am concerned

this old argument again?
different strokes for different folks.

granted. for you(and many others) it may be an old argument, but you have to
realise that there is a steady stream of new people to the site and possibly
even to torrenting, that have no idea what these things mean. i know that alot
of these things may be in the section for newbies, but there are a raft of
reasons why people might not see it (apart from the obvious, that they're
blind!! thought i'd beat you to that one 🙂)

maybe, one day, when one of the admins get a free minute or so 😂, they
could add that thread to the faq 😉

but then you're not taking into account the fact that it takes longer to encode
a h264 release than it does an xvid release.

i download the hrs because unfortunately i'm still running an older pc that
can't quite handle 720p x264 - i'd be gutted if hrs ceased to be carried.

are you using the coreavc h.264 codec? i used to not be able to play 720p files
on my computer, but after switching over to that codec, even my crappy laptop
can play them with no problem.

720p is definitely worth the download time if you are watching them on a big
screen, like a hdtv or a hd projector(my personal fav). looks freakin awesome
even blown up 80+ inches.

my thoughts about hr's with out reading others comments

- still better quality then 352p 350mb files and 5.1 dd
- if my projector didn't work, or i didn't have access to it (leaving me with a
sdtv) then i would download the hr (not 720p like normal) for the 5.1dd and
because on a sdtv 540p xvid and 720p x264 really make no difference so no need
for the extra 400mb at that point.
- compatibility on few year old comps. i know it took me a while to find out how
to play them (special tcpmp version then later found mpc + coreavc). last year i
didn't even know how to play 720p x264's on my old computer (amd athalon xp
1.8ghz 2200+, 512 mb ddr ram, ati radion 9000 pro 128mb). i saw 700mb 720p x264
(just a little better then hr) for prison break s02e01 and i couldn't even play
a 1.9mbit x264 (hr bitrate). yet i could play 1.43gb 720p xvid (4mbit). luckly i
found out how in time for lost s03e01 in october 2006
- for people that start downloading the next day or even after eztv seeders are
gone or if they have dl speed limited around 100kb/s then downloading the hr is
a lot easier if they are still willing to wait for quality.

however know i've got a pc that could play 1080p 20mbit h264 .ts with no problem
(uk hdtv pees on usa hdtv)

yeah, i've installed coreavc but unfortunately even that cannot save an old
1800xp. i will obviously eventually upgrade but to be honest an old 1800xp with
512mb ram runs xp perfectly fine and 720p is the only actual reason i have to
upgrade aside from moving to vista.

and the #1 reason for the hr rips.....

a hacked xbox running xbmc can only play hr. it can not play 720p!

hr ftw!
