i have been torrenting for a while now and i am so used to following the
nfo/sfv/rar files format when up/l and d/l and i was just curious why eztv
does not follow these guidelines...

they're unnecessary.

the only one that might be of interest are the nfo files but you get one or two
and you find out that eventually you don't really read them anymore anyway.

1. because the sfv/rar method was introduced to maintain file integrity.
torrents use hashing as a way of maintaining file integrity. so the sfv/rar
method is superfluous to requirements.
2. torrents are not ftp. when you see the nfo/sfv/rar method used in torrents
it's because the files originated from ftp servers and the torrent releaser
could either: not be arsed to unrar or wanted to provide the release in its
original untouched state.
3. we would have more people asking the opposite of your question if we did it
the other way. e.g. "how do i open these rars?! with windows media playz0r?!!!"
4. when it comes to certain things, more information for the general public is
not always in the best interest of the groups.

i probably missed an important point but that's all that comes to mind atm.

nfos would come in handy in cases of propers/repacks, as they contain the reason
for the new release. that, or i can continue to look on orlydb.com *shrugs*

it doesn't really matter because people here always post the nfo
here when
there's a nuke, and why there's a proper, repack, etc etc.

how do i know? because i'm one of those people who does it. half the time other
people beat me to it.

if you don't know this, which you probably don't...because of your post, then it
means you're not reading the posts made about the files.

so keep on "shrugging" ok.

actually i have seen this information posted, i have also seen nights with
several nukes, yet the information is not posted because the forums are down.
so...

on public tracker torrents a torrent is more likely to stay seeded for longer by
individuals when its a single .avi file instead of a folder torrent with or with
out rar's

also rar's is only useful for scene ftp servers and usenet
torrents dont need it.

sfv is used to check the rar's to make sure they are complete
nfo is a txt file often with ascii art in it and info about the file (but many
groups put the pre name and date and pass that off as a nfo)

also, aydin1954 has posted a few links for sites that post info on
releases.

it's in the "good links and tips for newbies" thread.

hope that helps. 🙂

i think that's actually where i came across orlydb, haha. though you are right,
the information usually finds it's way into the tor topics, the only time it's a
problem is when the forums are down, they seemed to be down for a majority of
the time during last weeks releases.

could always try and find a way to get the information onto the main site
similar to that of orlydb (an icon that brings up a 'tool tip' with the
information) but that could be impossible with the current set-up and whatnot,
or simply more work then needed.

and like you said, the information is out there, if you look. though it can be
nice at times to have the information at your hands on the site you mess with,
instead of needing to look elsewhere.

whatever works though, and currently, checking orly isn't too much of a hassle
for me.
