i've been using the kazaa lite mega codec pack for a long time now and i use vlc
mainly for kvcd's and windows media player for the rest. just curious what more
experienced people are using and maybe why? i notice a lot of videos' sound is
out of sync and i was wondering if some players correct this.

it's very easy to correct with vlc :-

ctrl k to increase audio delay
ctrl l to decrease

you can also do it with mpc (media player classic) that comes with the k-lite
codec pack :-

+ on numeric keypad to increase delay
- on numeric keypad to decrease

and you knew, of course, that k-lite already includes ffdshow & mpc ... right ?

lol, neither.
just download vlc, mpc along with the following codecs: xvid, coreavc,
ac3filter, ffsdshow (disableing h264 feature in it) and ac3filter and you will
be all set

instead of installing a whole bunch of crap like some "codec pack", i'll
install and use only those few codecs/applications i need. for movies, those
include fddshow and mpc with a few additions like ac3filter. i don't need every
other codec invented, so why should i install them?

to install any "codec pack" is equal to installing a whole ms office suite just
to edit a small text file (batch/.ini/etc.) and not just to use notepad for
that purpose.

yes, k-lite may have fddshow and mpc included (after all, it's a collection!),
but it comes with excess baggage which is not needed. why fill up computer with
all unneccessery stuff, unless you really want to clean your computer every now
and then?

i blame sleep derprivation for this kind of ranting of mine... 😉

why install all that anyway

install vlc
install xvid
install a decent mp3 codec (cant remember which one i use)
install ac3filter if you need it

winamp and wmp are just bags of crap for playing vids, if there are too many
codecs players will become confused and cause the sync problems, i've never had
a problem playing any files with this setup, even mkv files play fine in vlc
with no problems.

just use:
- media player classic
- ffdshow

this decodes pretty much anything, including x264, ac3 and all kinds of
xvid/divx. no need for any "pack".

ffdshow can fix syncproblems too - in the menu "queue & misc", option video
delay. use -values (i.e. -50) if the picture is behind the audio and +values
(i.e. 50) if the picture is before the audio. experiment, it's easy.

most people will not need separate:
- mp3-codecs
- ac3-filters
- codecpacks

install quicktime alternative lite if you want quicktime-content, and real
alternative for realplayer-content.

he's got a point, with any "modern" videos the "codec packs" can cause more
trouble than they would potentially solve. that is unless you wanted to whip-out
that xxx clip from 1998 @ 320x240x12fps. personally i find mpc more intuitive
than vlc, though vlc's ability to simulcast streams makes it attractive for
capturing those pesky embedded videos. :d all in all, i think its quite amazing
that all of this content can be played on so much with all the bureaucrazy and
the man called rupert.
