Tech help to change an extension on a file

I downloaded a file (movie) as a MKV however when opening it in windows explore I found the detail of the file shows shortcut.
How the hell did that happen now I can't open it to watch. Please help to change it into either a avi or mkv or any other so I can
watch. I am a user so plse go slowly and kindly in your explanation. Thanks
