Help please (technical issues)

hello all you lovely, far more technically saavy than i am, people:

i downloaded a torrent and there seems to be no sound. in the properties of
the file (in the summary) for some reason it doesn't list a format (e.g. mpeg
layer-3) it only lists a bit rate, in this case 256 kpbs. is there a way for
me to turn the sound on (i know this sounds like a stupid question)? or should
i just scrap the torrent and find a different one (i'd really rather not do
this)?

your help is really appreciated, so please please please help me.

it might need the ac3 codec for the sound.
