a lot of the us .edu sites have active monitoring for copyright infringing
activity (blanket deals with mpaa/riaa etc to minimise lawsuits and whatnot)
hence they show up a lot in ip blocklists.

very interesting! i just installed pg2, and was having problems with it. i
had all the lists checked, so it was blocking heaps. but the only problem was
that dht on utorrent wouldn't log in. so i took off the educational list, and
hey presto! dht working again. has anyone had a similar problem? my theory
is that they are on a block list for a reason. so i'd really like to keep all
the lists checked. but how can i determine the ones that are effecting my dht?

hey aussiemadmum,

to make it easier for your torrent client to access dht do the following...

launch peer guardian and enable the lists that you want enabaled.
include the education ones.

launch your torrent client with no active torrents.
try and do it when you have nothing qued at all.
once your client starts it will automatically attempt to connect to dht servers/
trackers (whatever they are).
no go into peer guardian and look at the currently blocking list (in the center
of the main screen).
you should have one address being blocked about 3 times in a row.
right click on that address and click permantly allow.
this should resolve your ability to connect to dht whilst still keeping 99.9% of
the education block list running.
you will still get individual blocks from dht nodes tho (cause they will be ones
hosted on uni campuses) but they will account for about 2% of the total nodes
available.
i usually get about 250 nodes for dht.

i hope that made some kind of sense.

thanks tonsar. that makes complete sense. good thinking. isn't it funny that
when you look at a problem for a while, you get stumped. but with a fresh
point of view, it all makes sense!

now my only problem will be stopping all the torrents. i don't think there has
ever been a time that my client isn't working it's butt off!!! 🙂

thanks for your help.
