Capture Software Question

what capture software do the groups who record the shows use? does anyone know
or does it vary from group or person?

for hdtv or pdtv releases, no one actually 'captures'. they record an un-altered
digital tv stream to a *.ts file (using the software that came with their
digital (or hdtv) card), which is essentially the same as what dvds use
but with better error correction. they then use a program like videoredo to cut
out the adds, then convert to xvid the same way you would from a dvd.
