now then, i've seen it, and i will post my reply. although most of you didn't like the hogfather, and liked this a whole lot more, i tend to disagree. i loved the hogfather. it breathed pratchett through and through, the characters were translated pretty much perfectly, the story was done well, and the atmosphere was awesome. i liked the colour of magic a whole lot less. this is mostly due to personal preference, of course. the hobbit played twoflowers perfectly, exactly the way i imagined him, but rincewind is a different story. maybe this is because i've played and loved the discworld games, but i imagined him to be skinnier and scrawnier than whoever is playing him now. i loved the wizards, though, and the whole of discworld was put together nicely. the voice-acting bothered me a small bit. in my opinion, it sounded a bit forced at times, and could've been done more naturally. also, it wasn't nearly as stylish as hogfather was, atmosphere-wise, and a bit too silly sometimes. i know pratchett is silly, but in a serious way. although weird, exaggerated and odd things happen in his books, which seem to us to be silly, for the characters in the stories it makes perfect sense. it occurred to me while watching this, several times, that even the characters would find it silly, or didn't really take themselves seriously. it didn't draw me in the same way hogfather did. all in all i'd give it a 7/10, maybe an 8/10. so even though i do have my share of critism, as you can read above, i did enjoy it overall and it wasn't all that bad. i'd give the hogfather a 9/10 though. |

i agree with those that thought this was disappointing. while the hogfather wasn't great, this is worse. hogfather could have been better with better acting (mark warren can really chew the scenery). this one has problems from the ground up: writing, directing, and design. it's childishly silly whereas pratchett tends to be silly in a satirical way. worse is, it's kind of dull. if you want to see some better discworld, get a hold of the wyrd sisters and soul music animated series. they really capture the discworld wonderfully. i'll still watch part 2 of this in hopes of improvement, but i won't hold my breath. thanks for posting this though. |
