i'd like to thank everyone who responded to my question a few pages ago about what stargate atlantis is about and how it compares to bsg; and for the advice on where to get started. so far i've watched the first four episodes of season 1 of sg1. while it's a little dated, it's pretty good for its time. i can see that it addresses some sociopolitical issues that are interesting (like the role of women, for example) and does so in a kick-ass way. it's also got some really scary sh*t happening with those snake-like creatures (reminiscent of alien) and that's certainly compelling. at the same time, it's a bit of a stretch when every planet they visit resembles earth...but that's ok. i probably will not watch every episode of sg1 because it would take forever but i will watch quite a few and catch up via wikipedia or other episode guides. there's some similarity to startrek with this show in that they visit other planets, discover and meet new life forms, solve problems and achieve moral victories. i also watched this episode of stargate atlantis to get a taste of what the show is like. i am a bsg fan and found this episode to be not as compelling as a typical bsg episode. before some of you get all freaked out and start attacking me because i've watched bsg from the beginning and therefore have an attachment and i have only watched this one episode of stargate. that said, i can usually get a feel for a show and the reason it draws me in or doesn't from one episode. one of the reasons i like bsg is because it explores the complexity of morality and politics. it's also got a cyberpunk feel to it and i like the darkness, the bleakness of it. on bsg the characters are well developed and they are not simple characters. another cutting edge show i really loved was firefly and bsg and firefly have some things in common in their darkness and conflicted morality. the cylons are not all bad guys and the humans are not all good guys. the evolution of the cylon-human relationship makes for compelling television. this stargate episode had a real startrek feel to it. for example, the producers electronically enhance and alter the voice of the bad guy to enhance the vision of him as evil. i find this a less sophisticated and somewhat juvenile approach to portraying evil since we know in the human world that evil is often not self-evident and the evil in people is not easily read. also evil people are a mixed bag. well we know this right? anyway, i don't want to rile the feathers of big fans of this show, these are just first impressions. but my first impression is that bsg is more sophisticated and realistic and i tend to prefer realism in my sci-fi. but i will watch and who knows, the show may persuade me otherwise. |
