i'd like to thank everyone who responded to my question a few pages ago about
what stargate atlantis is about and how it compares to bsg; and for the advice
on where to get started.
so far i've watched the first four episodes of season 1 of sg1. while it's a
little dated, it's pretty good for its time. i can see that it addresses some
sociopolitical issues that are interesting (like the role of women, for example)
and does so in a kick-ass way. it's also got some really scary sh*t happening
with those snake-like creatures (reminiscent of alien) and that's certainly
compelling. at the same time, it's a bit of a stretch when every planet they
visit resembles earth...but that's ok. i probably will not watch every episode
of sg1 because it would take forever but i will watch quite a few and catch up
via wikipedia or other episode guides. there's some similarity to startrek with
this show in that they visit other planets, discover and meet new life forms,
solve problems and achieve moral victories.
i also watched this episode of stargate atlantis to get a taste of what the show
is like. i am a bsg fan and found this episode to be not as compelling as a
typical bsg episode. before some of you get all freaked out and start attacking
me i acknowledge that it's not fair of me to judge and compare
because i've watched bsg from the beginning and therefore have an attachment and
i have only watched this one episode of stargate. that said, i can usually get a
feel for a show and the reason it draws me in or doesn't from one episode. one
of the reasons i like bsg is because it explores the complexity of morality and
politics. it's also got a cyberpunk feel to it and i like the darkness, the
bleakness of it. on bsg the characters are well developed and they are not
simple characters. another cutting edge show i really loved was firefly and bsg
and firefly have some things in common in their darkness and conflicted
morality. the cylons are not all bad guys and the humans are not all good guys.
the evolution of the cylon-human relationship makes for compelling television.
this stargate episode had a real startrek feel to it. for example, the producers
electronically enhance and alter the voice of the bad guy to enhance the vision
of him as evil. i find this a less sophisticated and somewhat juvenile approach
to portraying evil since we know in the human world that evil is often not
self-evident and the evil in people is not easily read. also evil people are a
mixed bag. well we know this right?
anyway, i don't want to rile the feathers of big fans of this show, these are
just first impressions. but my first impression is that bsg is more
sophisticated and realistic and i tend to prefer realism in my sci-fi.
but i will watch and who knows, the show may persuade me otherwise.

bsg is drama. stargate is adventure (like bsg was originally - when adama was
loren green). the whole family can watch stargate and have fun.

i like that you're fair minded about watching more before you decide, but don't
miss out watching the rest of sg1. it started out as a sequel to the original
film, but lots of episodes explore the ethics of how we react to situations on
earth and puts them out there in the galaxy. daniel is the conscience of the team
and o'neil (mc guyver!!!!) wants to shoot everything. there is a lot of depth
in the characters worked into the show over time. personally i don't like the
new bsg perhaps because ti's so dark or perhaps because i prefer adventure too.
i must admit to discovering over time that i love sci-fi but not the really dark
depressing stuff.
enjoy sg1 and atlantis, lucky you to be able to watch them all at once!

i have to say that 5x01 was - at least for me - one of the best sga premieres
(definitely better than s3's). yes, i do like special effects and shooting
things but without proper character interaction, it gets boring fast. and here,
we had it all aplenty. i'm very happy with this episode (i have yet to stop
watching it over and over again) and if the season continues in the same tone, i
will be a very happy camper indeed. i will definitely buy it on dvd when it
comes out.

i've never seen this show. how does it compare in quality to,
say, battlestar
gallactica? do you need to watch it from the first season to appreciate the
storyline?
it is nothing like the critically acclaimed, intelligent bsg whatsoever.. sg is
a lot more on the star trek kind of level...
no comparison, of course... that's why they only lasted 45 seasons across 7 series and 12 movies between
them.
each to their own, but it's not that easy to claim that one show is simply better. it's impossible to compare
between most science fiction shows. such different styles of show are clearly designed to appeal to
markedly different audiences. i guarantee that if star trek and stargate were not intelligent shows they
would not have spent so long on the air. the three shows are all on their own "levels".

ep is complete. it doesnt have all final special effects, you can tell that this
isnt all there. its about 90% tho. (for example, all planets and background
effects are present, they just arent as high quality/detailed as normal)
overall its very good for a preair.

looks like sga has jumped the shark. this isn't bad, it just isn't very
good. it think the writers are just out of fresh ideas. it's passable as a
sci-fi channel show but it doesn't have the same great feel of the original
series (which had jumped the shark a long time ago and the last anniversary
show was horrible.)

not a very good episode. it lacked all the quirky, fun, inside jokes that
stg and sg1 are famous for making. story-wise, i really don't give a crap
about taela and her stupid, ugly husband and that star trek recycled wannabe
wraith.
the is pretty much the end of the line for me and this series. i really
liked the previous seasons, but the way it ended, and what that means for
the rest of the season, there's no f'ing way i'm gonna watch it.

god i hate to say it, but i think sga really has jumped the shark.
tbh this was one of the worst season premieres i've ever seen for the show. at
least with s04, the premiere was a little cheesy but the whole "oh what now?"
problem scenario thing was hilarious enough to help it pull through. this
premiere had nothing distinctive about it.
what really got me was the absolutely awful cgi pan from michael's compound
world to his ship. it looked like it was done by a 3d design amateur! from that
moment, it went downhill.
now don't get me wrong, there have been a few cgi cock-ups in the past
(completed midway, anyone?), but then, there have also been some amazing cgi
scenes (horizon deployment, shots of the city and most of the space battles). i
love sga primarily for the storylines and the humor, but the cgi's an integral
part of the show...and it appears that they're now starting to skimp on that.
the weak story of s05e01 didn't help matters either. as the other poster said,
i couldn't give a damn about teyla and her kid. let's get back to the asurans
and replicator weir already! at least the goa'uld were funny! we had the likes
of good old apophis and ba'al, everyone's favourite baddies to keep us
entertained. only problem is...that was sg-1. let's be honest here people. the
wraith have been done to death and frankly, they're just really annoying!
there's only so many times i can watch a wraith try and feed on a human only to
take about 30 p90 rounds in the chest before it becomes boring (another thing,
why has shep started emptying clips into single wraith?).
hopefully the rest of the season picks up. i really don't want to have to say
goodbye to sga because i've grown up on stargate and it's kind of like a second
love to me. unfortunately, if things keep going the way they appeared to be
heading in s05e01, it may be time for me and my love of the show to part
company.

i'm well into stargate atlantis now. having watched, so far, the first 14
episodes of season 1, i can now appreciate the attachment people have to this
show. it is a fast-paced thrilling ride with lots of adventure, as one person
said. it's also got the element of creepy festering evil that keeps one
on tenterhooks (the dreaded wraithes - talk about an awesome makeup job!). the
cocky simplicity of some of the characters bugged me in the beginning, but now
that i've watched the show for some time i'm seeing the humour in it and really
enjoying it. the special effects and computerized imagery, particularly the
shots of atlantis are truly stunning.
thankfully, i was able to get all 4 seasons in pretty good quality. as
for sg1, while i'd like to watch, it would probably take me several years to
get through it all, so i gave up for now. i might go back to it once i'm caught
up with sa.
