Our favourite client has just passed over to the dark side...

and refrain from panic.... utorrent (micro torrent) has recently
been "acquired" by bittorrent, inc.

the bestest client in the world ever has arguably taken its first step to
becoming the mpaa's bitch. if you're a paranoid conspiracy theorist like yours
truly this is your bread and butter and should keep you blissfully occupied
till digg comes up with something more juicy.

there i said it, when you've recovered from shock and wiped away the dirty
tears, discuss (by that i mean create a 500post strong thread of mock outrage
and disgust)...

azureus since the beginning!

you know those supercomputers that try to work out what happened just after
the big bang, the kind powerful enough to figure out if god can bend his knees
both ways....they have trouble running minesweeper while the head of the
department is downloading the latest episode of "the class" using
azureus...nuff said

i run azureus with over 100 torrents in it at about 80mb of ram usage. and
there are the platform-specific builds that are even more efficient.

that said i also use utorrent on another machine that has different needs.

of course the current version of utorrent isn't going to change with this
announcement - so there's nothing stopping people from just sticking with it and
not upgrading. no need to worry about finding a new client until some fantastic
next generation torrent functionality comes out (like dht did).

if it aint broke dont fix it (or update it)
i'm a fairly recent ut convert from azureus. i love this version of utorrents so
the way i look at it, why bother updating--but i'm sure those clever programmers
will come up with something new i'll want.

what happens if you do upgrade?

an uneducated guess shatter?
sometime in the not too distant future you will be hooded, bundled into a
black van and beaten to death by fembots with socks filled with pieces of
toblerone. your family pets will undoubtedly be soon to follow suit.

mmm...ya toblerone is pretty good.

i really don't know why people have had problems with azureus eating resouces
even on high end machines. i've run in on a mirad of different machines, and
recomended it to a bunch of people and never had any problems. its no sleek
beast like utorrent or ktorrent (utorrent's linux equivilent) but for the
extensive amount of features and the best dht implementation, it isn't bad.
also, there is no other client where someone can just look at the output and get
a completely accurate "gut feeling" about the condition of the torrent. swarm
view and piece view in azureus rock.

maybe its some sort of config problem...with so many settings, i could see how
someone not very contientious could set something wrong.

azureus sucks. slow and crap - whereas utorrent has always been superb!

how exactly does this change effect us?

ive been using azureus from the begining and actually tried utorrent out for a
few weeks about 3 months back. though i do love how much less ram/cpu usage it
uses compared to azureus, theres just 2 problems i have with it. my number 1
problem with it is it takes alot more effort to set the maximum individual
upload rates for each torrent. in azureus i just highlight say all 10 torrents
i just added, then right click on it and set the max upload speed for each
individual torrent all in 1 setting, so say each can only upload at 8kb or
something. now with utorrent if i added 10 torrents and wanted to set the max
upload for each one, i would have to double click and go into each one
individualy to set it which gets annoying. now my number 2 problem with it is
all the plugins azureus has to offer compared to utorrent.

now if they fixed that i'd switch in a second. even if they only fixed my
first complaint.

edonkey sold out after wetting their tighty whities...not at the legal action,
but at the $cha-ching!$ they would get.

i guess utorrent is off to that gilded cloud in the sky.

couldn't believe it, but indeed. you can read an official statement from bram
cohen who is "proud" about on utorrent forum site (i'm sure you're smart enough
to find it). money matters. there's a good old german saying: can't eat as much
as i'd like to vomit...

it's possible in 1.6.1b - build 483 is the latest and stable in my experience.
