hi there, i have just received an email from my isp. they forwarded me an email
that nbc sent them about me downloading some episode using bittorent. tey got my
ip address one night when i was downloading.

how did they get my ip address? is there anything i can do? i am thinking
peerguardian, which i am not using yet, but i would like to understand how they
got the info and what it is i need to do for it not to happen again...

in order to connect to other peers on the torrent, you need to broadcast your ip
address. this is a basic fact of internet transfer, anyone sending information
to you needs to know your ip address.

peerguardian may have some effect but it's not going to stop them getting hold
of ip addresses in the swarm - all they need is one computer to connect which
isn't in pg's list and they can collect many hundreds of ip addresses.

if i connect to the tracker using the tor network, it should help with hidding
my ip to the tracker at least???

obviously, i only use tor for the connection to the tracker and not for the p2p one!

a friend of mine from the us has had numerous physical letters, and they've not
followed up on any of them. i think they do it to scare the little guy.
however, there is always the chance they will pick your name out of the hat and
send you to prison. should that happen: do not pick the soap up in the shower.

heck, we had people who smashed mp3 protection, cracked xp (and vista will
fall) and everything else.

they make it. we break it. when it becomes necessary to hide ip addys, they
will write a proggy (i refer to one that actually works very well on torr.s)

open utorrent
options >> preferences.
bitorrent, ip/hostname to report to tracker.

who ever did first implent a way to see the ip's in torrent programs is a moron.
with utorrent i can go to the peer's tab, right click, click copy peer list and
have 10,000+ ip's connected to the torrent on the clipboard with no effort at all.

also its a tv show that you could of get for free and recorded for free legally
so give me a brake.
did you get that message from downloading the eztv torrent or from some other site?

some torrent sites require that you register at their site in order to be able
to download the files that their torrent files link to. these are called
private trackers. if you dont register - you cant download. so even if you
have the torrent file loaded, you cant download unless your a registered
member of that site.

sites like pirate bay use open trackers. they dont allow private trackers on
the torrents that are uploaded to that site. mininova however has open and
private trackers in their listed torrents. when you do a search on mininova
and you find a little "p" in a red box next to the release name - that means
the torrent is linked to a private tracker. you would then have to go to that
site which the torrent is from and register in order for the file to start
downloading.

yeah.

because it's completely beyond the abilities of whoever the mpaa/riaa hires to
harvest ips to register on some random tracker site.

obviously 😉

if anyone is worried about the networks pay $10/month and use usenet. you will
max out your connection and you don't have to upload so you are not "sharing"
illegal videos.

in most juristrictions downloading unauthorised copywrited material is still
illegal. it's just a lot more hassle and a lot less cost effective for
lawyers to go after individual downloaders, so they very rarely bother.

you are still doing something illegal and are still playing the odds, albeit
the risk *is* much reduced of there being any consequences.

be aware that it's still not *zero* risk.

or you could use an ip filter or filter plugin for your bittorrent program. i
use safepeer for azureus and it hasnt done me wrong yet. peer guardian works
too, as a standalone.
