i have come accross machines that claim they play divx, yet until you get them
home and read the fine print in the booklet, they state . . .

*divx (when i say divx, assume xvid as well) files must be compiled from a
single source*

this means files made with removed add breaks, or as little as one splice, will
not play,

one was a sony 5 disc carousel (so pissed this wouldn't play them)divx compatable

the other was lg vhs/dvd recorder combo

i also found in the cheap no-name stuff, that if it claims to play mpeg4, it
will play all xvid/divx files i have thrown at it,

i have a cobolt divx player - played all

conia dvd player claims divx-played all

esc portable (240v) dvd player model dvd-385 (just bought 3 the other day
$au37ea) this has usb and sd/mmc/ms readers (mp3 and jpeg only)

but only claims mpeg4 - yet will play all i threw at it on a sample dvd-r i took
into the store

my suggestion for retail purchase is to do just that, take a sample dvd with eps
from diff groups and as old/new as you can vary

ps. had a lot of people with hdd dvd recorders say they also play all files,
although not claimed in the specs

good luck

i was similarly concerned about the divx xvid differences. i grabbed a ruck of discs i had burnt off in as
many different codecs and disc formats as i could find and took them round to someone's house who had
the dvd player i was thinking of getting (toshiba sd360e) and tested every disc.

all worked except the hr rips so i was pretty happy but there's no notification on it anywhere that it plays
xvid as well as divx so there doesnt seem to be any way to tell except testing/testimonials

to that end i'd say the toshiba i have, it was about 70 quid so a bit more pricey than the other suggestion,
its a multi region dvd player, and tested, definitely completely compatible with avi files under the divx,
xvid, and ffmpeg codecs; although i dont think it has mpeg4 compatibility.

that said i think my dvd player has been discontinued now, and they've bought out the sd370 instead and
i've no clue what that can do :s

i know you have all had problems with divx and xvid file players but beleive it
or not this little cheap player from svp plays the lot. i use it to view all
the files i download through eztv and it saves a lot of transcoding and also has
reduced the size of my dvd collection.

does the svp model playback the hr.hdtv files, cos i'm after a player that
can - and will it play them back in true anamorphic widescreenos again, my
media drive and my divx standalone (yamada model) just play back 4:3 letterbox.

cheers

ps does it have a usb connection also?

i think it\'s important to remember that you get what you pay for... i\'ve used a
couple dvd players that were supposed to play divx but had a lot of problems
with it not being able to read certain dvd

hi simonbreaker
yes it does play hr.hdtv files
yes it does play them in true widescreen
no it does not have a usb connection, but the 2800 does. but i think this will
only playback mp3 music and jpg pictures. i do not think it will handle divx
files via usb

it has many output modes component, composite, scart, as well as coax digital audio.

in reply to psamathos

yes you do get what you pay for.

this cheap dvd player does what it says it plays divx xvid hr.hdtv it will not
play x264 files but does dvd and cd audio as well.

i only have tested this player with taiyo yuden full-face printable (16x) dvd+r
and at under

i just got a tvix video jukebox. just load all your files onto the hard drive
and connect it to the av connector on your tv. much easier. play most anything
on you pc. the beauty with this is you can take it with you on holiday or even
watch it on your van. for extra storage just buy another hard drive. google for
the best price. the model i got is tvix - mu3100. the company that made this is
called dvico, from korea. search for the the manufacturer on the web.
